Parks Offer Sleigh Rides, Snowshoeing, and Cross-Country Skiing for Valentines

The Three Rivers Parks District wants you to enjoy nature with your valentine.  It's offering several events in the coming weeks in honor of Valentines Day.

At Richardson Nature Center in Bloomington, there will be candlelight, chocolate and acoustic music.  At Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista, visitors can take a sleigh ride through the pastures.

Fall is here and that means it can be more dangerous for drivers on the roads because of Minnesota's population of more than one million deer.

State officials say the animals are moving around because it's deer breeding season and while crops are being harvested.

Time to Trim Trees: Emerald Ash Borer Hibernates

If you have an ash tree in your yard now is the perfect time to trim it up or take it down.

The emerald ash borer, a beetle that attacks and kills ash trees, is hibernating until spring.

The beetle is inactive between Labor Day and May 1st most years, but since this year has been unusually warm, it was active through September.

Spring Turkey Hunt Application Deadline Approaches

Turkey hunters have more time this year than they have traditionally had in the past to apply for this spring’s hunt, either electronically or by telephone. The deadline to apply for the 2011 spring season has been extended by about two weeks. Applications are now being accepted through Friday, Jan.

Zoo Boo Kicks Off October 16

Como Zoo's annual ZooBoo kicks off October 16 and runs weekends through Oct. 24.

During ZooBoo Como Zoo is transformed into a storybook paradise with a host of characters handing out treats throughout the grounds.  The event takes place weekends from 4:30 to 7:30pm.

Advance tickets for the ZooBoo are $6 or $7 at the door.  

Statewide parade of gardens comes to the Twin Cities

 

More than five dozen community gardens in the metro will be showcased in a statewide parade next month.

The fifth annual Parade of Community Gardens will take place Saturday, Aug.

Loon vs. Eagle: It's not easy being Minnesota's state bird

         I’ve spent alot of time on the waters of Minnesota and have observed loons for years.   I was even struck by an unsuspecting underwater loon, while I was fly-fishing on the shores of Lake Superior.
